Suzuki T500 1971

Restoring this bike pretty much completes the full set of early Suzuki two stroke twins, as we have already done a tT20, T200, tT250 and T350. This T500 came to us as an unmolested US import, so low miles too! It was just tatty enough to require the new era treatment…

The engine was very tired, so the crank was sent away for refurbishment and a pair of oversize Pistons sourced. The cases and top end were Aqua blasted and the outer covers polished and finished with a light brushed effect. A set of new bearings, engine seals and a gasket set were purchased and the engine was reassembled ready for fitting.

Chassis wise, there is a lot of chrome on this model, so whilst that was away, we repainted the frame and cycle parts, cleaned up the electrical components and restored one of the clocks (we found a NOS tachometer) to make a good pair. With the original fasteners zinc plated the build could start. New swing arm bushes and head race bearings were fitted, new classic look tyres were eased on the rebuilt wheels and the rolling chassis was ready to accept the engine. With the shiny new paintwork, recovered seat and lots of gleaming chrome it was ready for another 50 years of cruising the British roads!
